 Description:

A book is rarely produced through the efforts of just the authors, and this book is no exception. Many
people contributed to its creation, both directly and indirectly. There are so many people that it’s not
possible to list them all!
This book’s genesis was in 1999, when Rick Sturm and Winston Bumpus collaborated to produce
Foundations of Application Management (John Wiley and Sons, 1999). Sixteen years and millions of
air miles later, Winston approached Rick with the suggestion that, since so much had changed regarding application management in the intervening period, they produce a new book on the topic. In 1999,
application management was truly in its infancy. While application management will not be fully
mature for decades, if ever, huge advances were made in the past 16years. Although Winston ultimately
decided that he was unable to proceed with the project, without the initial impetus he provided, this
book would never have been written. For that reason, he deserves special thanks.
Major contributions were made by the research team at Enterprise Management Associates, Inc.
(EMA). In particular, Steve Brasen contributed to the chapter about Mobile Applications and David
Monahan contributed substantially to the Application Security and the Internet of Things chapters. The
appendix about CMDB was largely derived from CMDB Systems: Making Change Work in the Age of
Cloud and Agile (Morgan Kaufman, 2015). Dennis Drogseth was one of the authors of that book and
assisted with the appendix
